Trans Mental Health Study 2012

This research from 2012 remains relevant and useful since it clearly articulates the need for respectful and timely health services for transgender people. Note that it does contain information about suicide and self-harm. This data unequivocally demonstrates that lack of access to appropriate transition related services negatively impacts transgender people’s mental health and increases the risk of suicide:

“Suicidal ideation and actual attempts reduced after transition, with 63% thinking about or attempting suicide more before they transitioned and only 3% thinking about or attempting suicide more post-transition. 7% found that this increased during transition, which has implications for the support provided to those undergoing these processes” (p89).
